ReviewsThe forgotten Kennedy is forgotten no longer. ROSEMARY is a rare thing, a book about the Kennedys that has something new to say. --Laurence Leamer, author of The Kennedy Women   In her engaging and compassionate ROSEMARY: THE HIDDEN KENNEDY DAUGHTER, Kate Larson illuminates the poignant story of a resolute girl falling behind in a glamorous and competitive family. Rosemary's own story comes alive against the broader and often shocking background of 20th-century attitudes toward the intellectually disabled, and sheds fascinating light on how the characters of Rose Kennedy, Joe Kennedy, and Rosemary's famous siblings were indelibly shaped by her determined yet tragic life. --Will Swift, author of T he Kennedys Amidst the Gathering Storm Kate Clifford Larson delivers an engrossing portrait of Rose and Joe Kennedy's tragic misunderstanding of their oldest daughter's capabilities, and of how her fate changed the Kennedy family forever.  And yet it is Rosemary herself who shines from the pages of this profoundly revealing family story. --Marya Hornbacher, author of Madness:  A Bipolar Life, The forgotten Kennedy is forgotten no longer. SynopsisThey were the most prominent American family of the twentieth century. The daughter they secreted away made all the difference. Joe and Rose Kennedy's strikingly beautiful daughter Rosemary attended exclusive schools, was presented as a debutante to the Queen of England, and traveled the world with her high-spirited sisters. And yet, Rosemary was intellectually disabled -- a secret fiercely guarded by her powerful and glamorous family. Major new sources -- Rose Kennedy's diaries and correspondence, school and doctors' letters, and exclusive family interviews -- bring Rosemary alive as a girl adored but left far behind by her competitive siblings. Kate Larson reveals both the sensitive care Rose and Joe gave to Rosemary and then -- as the family's standing reached an apex -- the often desperate and duplicitous arrangements the Kennedys made to keep her away from home as she became increasingly intractable in her early twenties. Finally, Larson illuminates Joe's decision to have Rosemary lobotomized at age twenty-three, and the family's complicity in keeping the secret. Rosemary delivers a profoundly moving coda: JFK visited Rosemary for the first time while campaigning in the Midwest; she had been living isolated in a Wisconsin institution for nearly twenty years. Only then did the siblings understand what had happened to Rosemary and bring her home for loving family visits. It was a reckoning that inspired them to direct attention to the plight of the disabled, transforming the lives of millions., The revelatory, poignant story of Rosemary Kennedy, the eldest and eventually secreted-away Kennedy daughter, and how her life transformed her family, its women especially, and an entire nation

  • Heartbreaking

This is a story of the relentless need of a father to make his special needs daughter conform into the likes of his other children. Joseph and Rose Kennedy did try very hard and were certainly wealthy enough to provide all means of education for their daughter, Rosemary. However, in desperation, he would make a final decision that would forever alter the life of his beautiful, loving daughter. Not only was her life altered but there was forever a hole left in the family of a missing child and sister. Rosemary had such a capacity for love and she dearly loved her family. Heartbreaking is the fact she was taken from her family; isolated away from them. She no longer had the loving relationship of her mother and father, brothers and sisters. If, in her mind she was able to remember her family, I can only imagine the sadness she lived with daily. This book was the best and the arthur wrote in such a way that the life of Rosemary just called out to me on every page.

  • Poor rosemary

I enjoyed this book as sad as it was, it reminds me that no matter how much money you have or your tittle in life tradgey can strike any family. When you have an egotistical man like joe Kennedy he thought he was doing the right thing for his daughter and it backfired, what a tragic tale this is. I would recommend this book but prepare to have a good cry. Her story haunted me for days.

  • Clean like new book.

We all know about the Kennedy's and their fame and fortune and tragedy, but not much is known about Rosemary. Sad and interesting. This is a very clean used book, like new, a good bargain.

  • A very interesting book

I read a lot about Rosemary while reading the "Patriarch", the book about Joseph P. Kennedy, her father. I found the book very interesting, read it in 2 days, and have since loaned it to two other friends.

  • A Great Book That Weaves In Both Disability and Political History Together

This is a terrific book - as someone who worked for many years in both politics and the disabilty field, Kate Clifford Larson has done a masterful job weaving the two together and also following up on the post Joseph P. Kennedy years, when what happened to his daughter is just as compelling as the events in the 1930's and 1940's. - GTC
