MIAMI MAYHEM, which was filmed seven years later under the title TONY ROME, is a fine little mystery, a quick and enjoyable read that stands somewhere midway between Mickey Spillane's spellbinding rough-hewn action and Raymond Chandler's more subtle and atmospheric story-telling. The plot was pretty much mimicked by the film's screenplay (and even some of the better dialogue seems to have originated here) -- a bit of emphasis was changed to give the principal female character more to do, and some vents were reshuffled, and a lot of macho schtick for Sinatra added in -- so anyone who's seen the movie will kind of know where things are going and how they get there, but the sections unique to the book are worth reading and author Marvin Albert writes in a literary voice that's very agreeable, at least to this reader.
