great instrument after tweeking
The neck needed a bit of work. The fret ends were very rough, as was the nut. Frets needed leveling. The machines were ridiculously tight. All these are easy fixes if you have the experience. Since this is a beginner model, most would need to bring it to a shop. That said, it sounds great and, with all the tweeking done, it is a fine instrument.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Very poorly built and requires a full setup
Where do I begin! Even when the mandolin arrived “new,” the first flaw that gathered my attention was the terribly poor finish and build quality. Near the F scroll, barely finished and poorly cut. Frets are very sharp, fretboard already pitting and dry. Tuners have no lubricant and as cheap as the rest of it. Strings need to be replaced, but nothing tuned up to key. Intonation all over the place. Sharp over an entire half step at first frets, nut needed filing dramatically... bridge poor contact, action so high you can almost fit your finger beneath the string. Bridge needs sanding. Very poor sound as well, even after a slew of painful adjustments . You are better off throwing your money away at this price point or putting it towards a functional mandolin at a higher price. A lesson that cost me just over $100Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Nice mandolin, high action
This is a really nice mandolin for beginner/intermediate. The sunburst is gorgeous and the tone is sweet. In the nut height is too large though so the action is extremely high and it needs to be adjusted. It's at a music repair shop now getting fixed and set up for reasonable price. It's definitely worth the money for total purchase and set up by a professional repair shop. Needs professional set up.
The frets are cut too long and the edges are very sharp. The neck on mine was bowed and warped. The bridge is too high and can't be adjusted down. I am a luthier and I fixed mine, but it took about 3 hours. I would have charged $150 to fix it if it had been someone else's who brought it to me. Oh, and the E string broke the first time I tried to tune it and the strings are very hard to change.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Great Quality For The Money
I bought this just to have a Mandolin I could mess around with. I was very impressed with the quality for the price I paid. I have a "The Loar" LM-322-F-BRB and this sounds just as good for 1/3 of the money. I did have to do some set-up on it to get the action where I wanted it. Good looking mandolin but needs alot of work to be able to play.
