In this 3rd book of the Mrs. Murphy Mystery series, a body has been discovered in the slave quarters at the Monticello home of Thomas Jefferson. With Jefferson being dead more than 170 years who do you question about the dead man who died from a blow to the head? On top of all this, another, more recently murdered body is discovered. Someone wants the secrets that have been buried with the other body to remain secret. The book covers a lot of history dealing with Jefferson, his descendants and his slaves, and Ms. Brown provides a chart in the beginning of the book to help us out, but I found it to hinder, more than to help...unless you are a Jefferson buff already. Jefferson had been rumored to have fathered a child by one of his slaves,Sally Hemings, and the man found murdered may also been involved with one of the slaves. The citizens of Crozet join together, along with Mrs. Murphy and Tee Tucker, to prove that their beloved Jefferson had nothing to do with the murder. Uncovering old skeletons can only lead to new modern day ones so Mary "Harry" Haristeen, postmistress, must solve the mystery before curiosity kills the cat. Outside of all the Jefferson history, which can be difficult to follow at times, this was a good read and in the end I did learn a little more than I started out with on the life of Jefferson.Read full review
I had a good experience using the Murder at Monticello novel. If you love mysteries, as well as cats, you'll love this novel.
Fun and satisfying mystery solved with the aid of pets. Communication foibles are a hoot. Good plot twists and comedy relief mixed with observations of characters in a small southern town. Warm and cozy reading.
