Compelled to seek the meaning of our time on earth and beyond
I have not finished reading this lovely book yet because I just moved and was interrupted, but I can't wait to get back to it. I grew up with Elvis in the 1950's and 60's, and fortunately my mother adored him. The songs I loved as a child are still my favorites, but I have added to them. One of the main reasons I have always been drawn to Elvis was his spiritual side, which even I noticed as a young child and through his gospel songs. Of all Elvis' friends and those around him, I have felt for a very long time that Larry Geller truly respected, loved, and admired Elvis, and gave his friendship with much love. He seemed to show such gratitude for his opportunity to know this amazing man and share friendship with him. Larry was in tune to Elvis in a way that I don't think many, if any, were. It doesn't mean Larry always agreed or maybe even understood where Elvis was coming from, but he tried during those times and he always respected Elvis. I have wondered often how Elvis would have managed as well in his life if he had not met Larry. It was Divine intervention! It was what Elvis needed most at the time. I don't think Elvis would have been as happy a person or found spiritually so much that he did and wanted to find. Larry held no grudge toward Elvis when Elvis seemed to not stand up for him and they didn't see each other or have any contact for a few years when, I believe, Col. Parker didn't want Larry around Elvis because of the spiritual seeking. It made me sad to read that, but Elvis had suffered a severe concussion in a fall in his home and wasn't doing well. He went on shortly after that to marry Priscilla, make the 1968 Comeback Special, and then play in Las Vegas. So a lot went on to distract not just Elvis from mending this relationship, but Larry also moved forward in a different direction and probably did some things he needed to do also. Elvis eventually contacted Larry and it was magic again. I appreciate so much how Larry treats Elvis with love and respect always. It doesn't matter that Elvis has been gone so many years now, as Larry never changes in this respect. I highly recommend this book "If I Can Dream" - Elvis' Own Story. Anyone who is an Elvis fan and also very interested in his spiritual side and nature should delve deeper into this part of Elvis, and this is a wonderful book Larry has written for his friend to honor him. Elvis requested that people know who he was and not just the image (which was also part of Elvis), and he asked Larry to tell his story. Thank you very much Larry for a treasure! I had a brother who died 10 years ago, but who for 25 years followed a similar path of spiritual seeking as Elvis. My brother even read the same books, and "The Prophet" being one of my brother's favorites. I don't think my brother even knew of Elvis' spiritual seeking nature, although my brother was a big fan of his music. Because of my brother partially, I felt I could understand Elvis so well and his seeking nature and the direction it took him. I ended up following a similar path as my brother. It helped make this book just that more wonderful for me to read.
