If you only read one book about the Lakota Sioux nation, this should be the one!
This is the story of Red Cloud of the Lakota Sioux nation. It is as close to unbelievable as a true story can be - totally engrossing and extremely well-written. The authors have a great comprehensive perspective on the American Plains Indians and they have chosen an extraordinary man's life to tie all the pieces together. First Rate History and Sociology of Native Americans
Although I haven't finished this book yet, I find that it is unflinching in it's details of Native American and European American actions and a good background to the belief systems of each.
