Camera: Nikon D3300 My credentials as a photographer: i have none, but I am an enthusiastic amateur who occasionally gets "that shot" - usually by blind ass luck. We just returned from an extended trip to Peru where we did the obligatory trip to Cuzco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. We also went low and east and did a river cruise on the headwaters of the Amazon. Plenty of photo ops, but I seemed to always be caught with the wrong lens (choices were a 18-55mm and a 55-200mm) Close up and zoom opportunities abounded - often almost simultaneously. One of our group had a lens similar top this (after market brand, but same specs) and was able to take advantage of the full spectrum offered. Although a little larger and heavier, if gives me the opportunity to ditch the camera bag, so it's a win/win for me. Good package, but it contained some items that I absolutely could not figure out what the were for, and the sun hood was a terrible fit - it screwed on and the choices were either on or in your pocket. I ended up getting another "bayonet" type that is just fine, and can be inverted to snap on over the lens body when not needed. All in all, I am very pleased.Read full review

Optically it's great. However, the barrel of the lens had lens creep. The focus was not fast nor smooth, and it struggled to find focus with my camera. Had to send it back.

I bought this lens because I was tired of changing out lenses for close or far during my family camping trip to the forest. I lost many wildlife opportunities due to time spent swapping out lenses. This lens is both lenses in one. Yes a bit heavy but not much more than my 70mm-300mm telephoto lens I currently use. The week it arrived we had a fire near our house and in California we have the Cal fire, Super scooper, Helicopters and Big DC10 type plane/jets. I was able to zoom in so close and tight they filled the screen. When I magnified the image on playback I could see the pilot even the rivets on the plane. You loose some sharpness at the 300mm mark but not much. Also the focus motor is quick and quiet. Great lens. I wish I bought this alot sooner.

A great multi-purpose lens. I have it on a D7200 and I'm quite pleased. It saves me form having to swap lenses frequently. Would a 300 mm prime liens be sharper? Yes. And more expensive? Absolutely. Do I wish it had a wider f-stop? Sure. But I'm shooting for enjoyment and not employment. I spent thousands on prime lenses for my 4K video cameras but this is my fun, vacation camera and the simplicity of one lens is well worth the tiny compromise at full zoom. At wider angles it is crystal clear. it is great value for money.

I'm a lifetime photographer who has a ton of cameras and lenses. This one is not only massively usable due to the zoom capacity, but is the most responsive, fast, precise and 'fun' lens I have ever owned. Nikon has hit a grand slam with this lens. Buy one today with confidence.
