The minute is only a good movie because of the plot. The directors work is only mediocre because the beginning has to many unnecessary scenes. Later the director screw up really bad as he put lots of dust on the space ship Discover. The ship has no gravity so why should there be a layer of dust? It gets even worse as the scientist decides go from one ship to the other during acceleration and braking makes it. Here could have done it right after the, only few seconds lasting, acceleration and and would have had no problems because there wouldn't have been any inertia and it wold have been an easy trip. Anyway the movie answers all the questions you had at the end of "2001" and the ending sends a great message. If you didn't see "2001" the movie is only half as good.

I had fun watching this classic Science Fiction sequel to 2001. Roy Scheider and John Lithgow are great as two astronauts sent to investigate what happened to Discovery after the Hal-9000 computer went nuts and killed its crew. Bob Balaban plays Dr.Chandler the eccentric scientist who created Hal and must reactivate and repair it if possible. A much younger Helen Mirren plays the mission commander aboard the Russian spacecraft that shuttles them to the Discovery. 1980's Cold-War themes overshadow the movie as tensions between Russia and the US escalate forcing the American astronauts to seek refuge aboard the Discovery. This movie is a fun sequel with old-school non-CGI effects. Very timely too, considering recent tensions with Russia and President Obama's interest in sending a mission to Jupiter to search for life on one of it's moons.Read full review
In the movie 2001, humanity comes in contact with the super power that gave us the escape when we were apes in Africa, 4 million years ago, into the future, where we are now. In the movie 2010, we go on a mission to discover who the super power is. Unlike 2001, this one is verbal and it actually has some female lead roles. The space trip is all fine & dandy until they reach the planet where in 2001 the super power revealed him/her self to us. Here it is done in a different manner, but it is still the same thing. The lessons to be learned are: 1. Don't look for the super power. He/She is within us. 2. Don't make sequels to a classic. It will never come close to the original All in all, for 2001 addicts, it's a good one, even though it falls short.
I liked this film because it is much more entertaining that 2001. It has a lot of classic stars in it that work well. 2010 is dated because it takes place it came out in the 80's when the US and USSR were still in the Cold War. It is still a great film to view every once in awhile.

This movie explains why HAL did the things he did, and not because he was psychotic, what HAL did in 2001 makes perfect sense after you watch 2010. They did a great job, it's one of the very few sequels that are really good in comparison to the original.
