I send a coin each month to my 12 year old grand niece. Recently I sent her a reverse proof eagle and mentioned that there were two other finishes available including the "burnished". To help her understand how it is different from the usual coin finish I bought this coin and will some day send it to her. Some experts claim the burnished coins have image that appear to be "floating" off the surface. Not really sure I see that, but they are certainly different than the reverse proofs. I almost always buy MS or PR 69's as the premium to a 70 is not worth the cost. I now have severe doubts about the expertise at PCGS and NGC as to grading. Recently I purchased two coins rated by PCGS, one a 69 and the other a 70. Both had rather dramatic flaws that I could not accept and returned both the seller. The 70, supposedly a perfect coin, had a blotch on the reverse that was noticeable by sight. The other was a 69 and had some sort of ugly glue marks around the edge of the coin, both obverse and reverse. This was on the coin itself and not the holder. I think they are attempting to grade far too many coins like a production line and failing to properly evaluate the actual coin. My strong advise is to carefully screen the images on line before buying and also messaging the seller to have him/her carefully look using magnification for flaws. Far better than ordering a coin only to find a major unacceptable flaw and having to return it often with a restocking fee. UGH. Rating and slabbing was instigated on the theory that a 68 is a 68 and interchangeable. Clearly that is no longer the case.Read full review
