So what I've learned about Tom Robbins is that you have to have some faith. This is only the second novel I've read from him, but the arc is similar. In the beginning he's a bit wild and on the whole the thing looks a bit piecemeal, but at a point that comes a little past halfway the starts to come together. the many scattered and disparate elements congeal in a way you could never predict and the subsequent mold is both profound and entertaining.
