One of my all time favourite Ray Harryhausen movies (heck, one of my all time favourite movies period!) with one of the best stop motion monsters EVER. This is the one, people. Not only is the film beautifully restored but it comes with optional colorization that was supervised by Harryhausen himself, & it looks pretty gosh darn good...you can even actually flip back & forth between colour & B&W during a scene to compare! Not only that but you get a bunch of wonderful extras including commentary by the man himself, an interview with Harryhausen conducted by Tim Burton & another with the movie's female lead Joan Taylor, & documentaries on the film, the colorization process, & even one on the guy who did the music. This review, unlike my other ones, is short & to the point: GET THIS DVD!
If you love Ray Harryhausen movies then this is an excellent place to start collecting. This 2-disc set offers both the remastered b/w film along with a colorized version created by Legend Films at the push of a button on your remote allowing you to toggle between the images to see the differences if you want. Although the original b/w version is the way to go for film purists, the colorized version is worth watching and even Harryhausen himself was satisfied with the results. Includes fun extra features on both discs. This same DVD can also be found in a larger 3 film set with the earlier Harryhausen films "Earth vs the Flying Saucers" and " It Came From Beneath the Sea" both of which received the same colorized treatments as well. Those are worth collecting too but if you have all three it will give you repeats of some of the extra features on the discs. * It's also worth mentioning that this film and/or set is also available on BD. This is the colorized version of "20 Million Miles to Earth", but using a colorization process MUCH improved from back in the 90's. There is even a documentary about it in the "Bonus" features, along with an interview with Tim Burton(!)talking to Ray Harryhausen about the movie and his animation style. Colorized, this movie is far more entertaining than the B&W version, and Harryhausen admits in the interview that he would have shot it in color in the first place if he had had the budget to do it. For those who don't know, it is a similar plot to King Kong, except that the threat to society is the Ymir (un-named in the movie), a creature brought back from Venus in a rocket ship which then doubles in size every 24 hours after being exposed to earth's atmosphere. Acting is Ho-Hum, as is the case in many of Harryhausen's movies, but the main attraction of course is the stop-motion animation he used to bring magic to the screen. It's a fun movie on a bunch of levels, and MUCH better in color! Very enjoyable for lovers of old movies and devotees of Ray Harryhausen.Read full review
Top notch from the genius Master of Stop Motion and Visual effects, H Harryhousen. Filmed parts in Italy, as well as California. This American science fiction (1957, 83 min.) Stars Nathan Juran, William Hopper, Joan Taylor, and Frank Puglia. Especially wonderful to see in color (have option to watch in B&W or sharp color) w/ or w/o narration. Second disc, with interviews & information is worth the price alone. This is a must to own ! (1 of 3 of his films to be remastered and colorized...other 2 being "Earth vs Flying Saucers" and "It came from Beneath the Sea") Also famous for all the Sinbad (starring Kerwin Mathews) films, Jason and the Argonauts, Jack the Giant Killer, and several others.
20 Million Miles to Earth is one of Ray Harryhausen’s Best. I own a B&W Blu Ray copy, but this Colorized Version from Legend Films is outstanding. I’m a traditionalist when it comes to Classic Cinema but Legend Films brings this Classic into the World of Color in a Spectacular way. Ray’s interview regarding tge colorization of his film is insightful and entertaining,
