I bought the book because it was much enjoyed reading in my Youth. I had close to a hundred books and they were stolen from my storage unit. I would love to, and have replaced some of the books over the years. I am happy to have this book in my bookcase again. It is based on an actual account from Susanne's diary. It is well written and the story flows well. Never a dull moment. Calico Captive was much a favorite of my sisters and me. I could image in my mind the struggles that Mariam went through when captured by the indians. I could be with them as they were forced to march northward by the indians and surviving the wilderness. The book is very descriptive and well written. The historical accuracy is fantastic and helps give us a view of how Mariam and her family were taken from their home in Charlestown, NH 1754; forced to walk northward; Susanne giving birth in the wilderness; to an Indian Village, and then finally on to slavery in Montreal. With the friendship of a young girl who gave her respect (Hortense), and the love and courage of her sister Susanne, help Mariam survive many hardships during her captivity and slavery. Madam Du Quesne's piercing blue eyes can be seen in your imagination and give you a shudder. She finds the love of a young Frenchmen who is nothing like what Mariam has delt with before. For a brief time, Mariam and Susanne enjoy the life of the wealthy, as Susanne's husband travels to Albany to get ransom for his family and Mariam. Only the French and Indian War begins, causing later repercussions for Suzanne, her husband and children. Only by Mariam freedom can they be saved. As time ebbs by, slowly Mariam's love and memories of another young man return, causing her to make a decision which would impact her life forever. I absolutely recommend this book for any age.Read full review
