About this product
Product Information
Gamers join cartoonish versions of famous literary characters as they battle aliens through a steampunk version of 19th-century London in Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. The acronym stands for Strike Team Eliminating the Alien Menace, the group is led by Abraham Lincoln, and it includes Henry Fleming from The Red Badge of Courage, Queequeg from Moby Dick, and Tom Sawyer, among others. Agents wear boilers on their back and each wields a unique weapon and a special attack, and the action finds gamers teaming up with other agents and heading into third-person, turn-based battles.
Steam is more than just an acronym for the heroic group in this game. It also powers everything in the world, from the airships in the sky to the weapons players use, and steam is even the source of movement and healing during battles. Each agent consumes steam with every action, with one unit of steam being depleted for every space gamers move on the gridded maps, and weapons using differing amounts of steam. This resource management adds a tactical aspect to the action as players guide their agents around each map, collecting medals and gear, and looking for cover to hide from the vicious, insect-like aliens. Levels also contain checkpoints where gamers can save their progress, stock up on steam, sell medals to revive fallen teammates, and use gears to upgrade equipment.
In addition to the single-player campaign, Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. offers three different modes of local and online multiplayer action. Deathmatch pits two gamers against each other in a battle to the death, while Medal Battle is a five-turn contest to see who can collect the most medallions, and A.B.E. Battle mode involves taking control of the Anthropomorphized Battle Engine, a stories-high robotic version of Abe Lincoln. The game also offers Amiibo support, with players able to scan and play with characters from the Fire Emblem series.
I tried the demo for STEAM, and enjoyed it, but when I saw how cheap it was for a new copy, I bought one for myself, and one for my Sister who lives a few hundred miles away, so we could play together. For the price, it is totally worth it to buy a copy, and surprise a few friends with copies, so you can all play together over the internet.
STEAM itself is a really nice looking steam-punk themed strategy game. I find this to be more exciting in some ways than the Fire Emblem series, which is technically a 'better' game, but something about using the c-stick on the new 3DS to line up a shot is really satisfying. You can also move the camera angle manually using a virtual control stick on the lower screen, if you don't have a 'new' model.
I have only played it for an hour or so, but I've already gotten more than my money's worth. I think the only reason this game is under-rated is that it is very American looking. I get that it's all kind of a parody, and enjoy the humor, but I'm a casual gamer. Serious gamers might not be able to get past the comic-book visuals and (intentionally) cheesy dialogue, but under that layer is a really enjoyable game, with a well thought out introduction stage and difficulty curve.
Would highly recommend, based on fun, value, and multi-player functionality, I would rate this a solid 8/10. Not as deep or involved as a JRPG, it is really fun to surprise a few friends with copies and play together, or to practice in the story-mode.Read full review
Thanks very and so much for the perfect and excellent game!!! The game come me in a good time and it is a perfect state, im so happy for that. God blessyou ! And never worry for nathing and good succes in your life.
Excellent game, it's one of my favorites. It's a strategy game with historical/fictional characters, placed in a steampunked late 1800's. It helps if you've played the demo from eshop a lot, your stats and medals transfer over upon starting the game.
