I had heard of this band but never listen to their music...until my hubby introduced me to this amazing CD back in 1999!!! This band and indeed this CD is completely different to anything else in my collection...the frontman Greg Dulli, has a unique voice to see the least...it rocks, it hisses, it is hard to describe but it is almost tuneless but works well in a weird way! This a sexy almost dirty album....its not that the lyrics are THAT bad, though some are a little racy...but Greg Dulli manages to sound like a lusty, seductive man at the bar trying to get what he wants!! BUT that is what makes this album...a kinda weird breathlessness above killer music! Every track simply rocks...from the opening 'Something Hot' to the catchy 'Crazy' which I just love! 'Uptown again' adds in a new musical element with a string section...'Sweet son of a Bitch' is a little weird...just 22 seconds of moaning (apparently the frontman and 'friend' in an intimate moment!!!) But this leads into my fave - 66...quite frankly a dirty, sleazy song that is catchy and rocks at the same time as it is an eye or is that ear opener! John the Baptist again experiments with musical sound - an again Dulli is sultry on this to say the least! Slide Song slows it down as an almost but not quite ballad and Neglekted is slow, sultry and has an almost jazz element! This is a fantastic CD...full of great tracks, as different as they are the same, it is hard to categorize..and I am not sure I would even want to...it is simply the Afghan Whigs and for me, their greatest work!Read full review
