After the war I served as an eighteen year old US Army medic in Berlin as part of the Occupation Forces. I identified strongly with the "lost children." This book has taken me back in memory to the horrible reality of war and its effects upon children. For two years I worked with orphaned children, especially boys in desperation. In a five star rating I would give it a TEN. Quite apart from the reality of true circumstances, the author has written from a child's perspective with care and precision. The language, grammar and syntax are superb. The author has given a remarkable account of what it meant to be a child caught in the nightmare of World War II. Innocence and wickedness, pathos and hope are portrayed through a child's real life experience. It doesn't come much better!Read full review
This book takes the reader back to WWII describing in detail the experiences of a young German boy and his family during the war. It gives a very good perspective of how ordinary Germans survived the war. Highly recommended!!

Now generally known in the west. This shows the end of WWII in Germany and its aftermath. The civil population dealt with the absence of food, resources, and the retribution doled out by the Russians.
