Uses only 1 phase (1 leg) of 220 volt 2 phase generator output.
Upon purchase, I tested the Camco Power Grip 4-Prong Generator Adapter #55438. I was disappointed because I found that it uses only 1 phase (that is, 1 leg) of my generator's 220 volt 2 phase (2 leg) 30 amp output. I emailed Camco for clarification. I'm not an expert so to be fair, after receiving Camco's reply, I now understand the safety issues involved. However, probably most of us aren't experts and I think Camco could do a better job of describing the product's capabilities for the average non-expert consumer. I have pasted Camco's reply below. Begin Camco reply: "NEMA L14-30 is a 30 amp 125/250 volt plug. Let me draw a parallel with a standard 50 amp plug (NEMA 14-50). A NEMA 14-50 is a 50 amp 125/250 plug. It can deliver 50 amps at 250V or 100 amps at 125V. So, a NEMA L14-30 should be able to deliver 30 amps at 250V or 60 amps at 125V. If the customer has 30 amps at 250V and we drop one hot and feed the two 15 amp plugs off one hot, he will have 30 amp available at 125V. The other 30 amps/125 Volts will be on the leg we dropped. We can’t connect both hots separately to the 15 amp receptacles as you could then have 30 amps available at a 15 amp receptacle. Key is that it is a 125/250 volt device. Customer is correct that our adapter uses one of the two coils, which will half amount of power that the generator is rated at... unless it is an inverter type. He is incorrect about balancing as these two coils operate independent of each other. If he had a 7500w or larger generator he could get the full 3750w of power we advertise.
