Updated Cinderella story with a twist
This movie is good clean fun, appropriate for the whole family. Kate, an aspiring designer, goes to work at her estranged father's department store. When her evil stepmother and stepsisters sabotage not only her career, but her relationship with her father, Kate returns to the store as Nate, a flamboyant young man. The only fault I can find with this film is that Kate is utterly unconvincing as a man. Nate is laugh-out-loud funny, but "he" doesn't look, move, talk, or act like a feminine man, a transgender man, or any sort of man. Nate is obviously a girl wearing a fake goatee, which would be OK if the other characters assumed "he" is a biological female self-identifying as a man and respected that. But no, everyone immediately assumes Nate is a gay man, including a gay male co-worker who develops a crush on him. This requires far more suspension of disbelief than, say, SHE'S THE MAN, where Amanda Bynes passes as a teenaged boy...not an especially brawny or hairy boy, but more convincing than Nate. That being said, this is a comedy, not a documentary about gender identity. It offers fashion, fun, and a satisfying finale. Sit back & enjoy!
