Do NOT let the title detract you away from this film by Simon "Shawn Of The Dead" Pegg and former Friends star & upcoming director David "Ross" Schwimmer. This is a tale of a 30-something Englishman who five years earlier got cold feet at his wedding and "ran" off from his pregnant fiancée. Now he wants desperately to get back into her and their 5 year old son's life, but a new successful American businessman (Simpsons' Hank Azaria, who does better than expected) is in the way. Soon, Pegg's Dennis sees that an English marathon that Azaria's running in as well is his only chance to prove that he can finally finish something, even though he's slightly out-of-shape and is going to need help to prepare... I found this movie to be very warm and humorous, great for 30ish Dad's like myself. Pegg does a great job in his typical way, but the title stinks. He's NOT fat, he's got a spare tire, and even it looks a little unnoticable, while others still call him "fatboy". Like other Pegg films, instead of partner Nick "Hot Fuzz" Frost at his side, we now get another Shawn alumni Dylan Moran, who does a great turn as Thandie Newton's cousin and Dennis' best friend. It's been touted as a modern-day English Rocky, and while there's some things that earn it, it's also very funny in some parts too. Comes with trailers, making-of, bloopers and a commentary track with Pegg, Moran, Schwimmer (who still sounds like Ross after breaking up with Rachel), and strangely Pegg's real-life mother (why?), this release is worth a purchase and/or viewing. In fact, I enjoyed it more than Pegg's Hot Fuzz, which was a pretty good film in itself too. A nice surprise of a movie by two men you didn't think had it in them. Just ignore the title, okay? great runners comedy. even if you are not a runner you'll get a kick out of it. there were some very funny moments in this movie. i only wish that his big buddy from shaun of the dead (5 stars) & hot fuzz (4.5 stars) was in this one. beware there are a few crude parts so it is not for the whole family. for these 2 reasons i rate it 4 stars! notice: the following may spoil a part in the movie if you have not watched it yet. do not read any further if you want to be suprised! favorite part: fatboy has his friend pop a big blister on the bottom of his foot he got from running. the friend uses a nail! it pops and puss squirts right in his face! the friend jumps up and screams "that is the second most discusting fluid i have had in my eye!" ha! ha!
Honestly not the most original of films. It runs the gamut of many cliche's both from romantic comedies and from inspirational sports films. What is original, refreshing and completely undeniable is the performance of Simon Pegg and Hank Azaria. They're both incredible in this movie and spot on in their roles. If you're looking for Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz you won't find it as there's no Nick Frost in this movie and it's not directed by Edgar Wright (Simon's collaborators for those projects). But still... one out of three here is still better than most standard fare you see in movies. Definitely worth picking up.
If you're expecting the non-stop subtle humor that SOTD has, you won't find it here. It does have it's moments, but not as many as I would have liked. Simon Pegg is great as usual (but I'm probably a bit biased in that). If you are a Simon Pegg fan then you have to watch it-just because. I love Simon in everything, but this is my least favorite. If you really want to see Simon Pegg in all his funny glory, check out the BBC Television Series "SPACED". It's such a freakin' funny (but WAAAYY too short series). It was just released on DVD in the US. Sooo funny and VERY worth to have in your Simon Pegg collection. So in closing, Run Fat Boy Run is okay, but buy it cheap!
