    A Christmas Carol Collection

I have a collection of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol but had somehow missed this edition. I was really glad to find it and unless there are surprises out there, I think I have them all now - including 'Scrooged' with Bill Murray. I like the old black and white versions best and we watch every one of them between Thanksgiving night through Christmas day. They are all good and I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite, but it's "A CHRISTMAS CAROL", so there's no way it could be awful. LOL. Although they are all pretty much the exact same script, there's something that makes each version special. Fredric March... look at that face! He just screams "Scrooge, Baaah Humbug".

    Great actors with poor direction

This should have been a great production with March and Rathbone, two actors I respect highly. However, the direction is so plodding and uncreative, it is a waste of their talent. I believe it was made for TV and has those limited production values. The story is shortened to the point that many key elements of the plot from the novel and from the other versions are left out entirely making the flow jerky and confusing. It feels like they were in a hurry to get it done so they rushed past certain familiar parts of the tale to get it over with. The versions from the 30's and the 50's are both superior, even the 70's musical version with Albert Finney. I can't recommend this highly flawed production.

  • Worst Adaptation!

By far, this was the worst adaptation that I have seen! The great Hollywood Composer Bernard Hermann's Musical Score was simply ANNOYING to say the least. In almost every scene, the characters would break out into an "operetta-like" carols and songs. As a result, the production value of the film suffered; i.e. artistic liberties were taken due to time constraints. To add insult to injury, Frederic March's huge prosthetic nose as Ebenezer Scrooge wreaked of anti-semitism. I tried to find a redeeming factor with this TV-adaption but there was none. Instead, I highly recommend the 1951 Alastair Sim film version (Screenplay by Noel Langley) which garnered great reviews from Film Critics Gene Shalit and Leonard Maltin.

  • A Christmas Carol Disaster

I have watched many "A Christmas Carol" movies, and this one was the worse of all, and believe me there are many out there undeserving to be held as "true to Charles Dickens story" as this one was not. It's such an old rendition in trying to bring the characters to life, that it lost its affect in believing, plus it wasn't anything like the book. If you want the best in "A Christmas Carol" movie, stay with Alastair Sim as Scrooge, released in 1951, and true to its character and the story. The best of all the movies, and you won't be disappointed!
