Synopsis"The wonderful cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, one of the greatest achievements of European civilization, was on fire. The sight dazed and disturbed us profoundly. I was on the edge of tears. Something priceless was dying in front of our eyes. The feeling was bewildering, as if the earth was shaking." --Ken Follett "[A] treasure of a book." -- The New Yorker In this short, spellbinding book, international bestselling author Ken Follett describes the emotions that gripped him when he learned about the fire that threatened to destroy one of the greatest cathedrals in the world--the Notre-Dame de Paris. Follett then tells the story of the cathedral, from its construction to the role it has played across time and history, and he reveals the influence that the Notre-Dame had upon cathedrals around the world and on the writing of one of Follett's most famous and beloved novels, The Pillars of the Earth . Ken Follett will donate his proceeds from this book to the charity La Fondation du Patrimoine., "The wonderful cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, one of the greatest achievements of European civilization, was on fire. • beautiful, awe-inspiring, breath-taking magnificent the greatest achievement of all time.

This book on the Historic Cathedral of NOTRE DAME: is magnificent , but in 1163 the cathedral was too small, because the population in Paris, France was growing more. Construction of a cathedral, was a huge undertaking that would last for decades. It would required hundreds of workers and cost a fortune, people who erected this building, who lived in wooden huts, slept on the floor. People who were working to erected were simple people and used tools they had. The weather played a big part in building. In my notes that I jot down about the long-term weather, for examples: tree rings ice cores and lake deposits, their were years of bad harvests and famine. The story of the Notre Dame Cathedral took a long time to Build, this book gave me an eye-opening of what these people went through.

  • Great read

Really neat history of cathedrals starting in the 1100s. I love all his books and Notra Dome is very special to the author. One of his series is about building a cathedral in midevil times.
