SynopsisEver thought, There should be a German word for that ? Well, thanks to the brilliantly original mind behind Schott's Original Miscellany , now there is. Schottenfreude is a unique, must-have dictionary, complete with newly coined words that explore the idiosyncrasies of life as only the German language can. In what other language but German could you construct le mot juste for a secret love of bad foods, the inability to remember jokes, Sunday-afternoon depression, the urge to yawn, the glee of gossip, reassuring your hairdresser, delight at the changing of the seasons, the urge to hoard, or the ineffable pleasure of a cold pillow? A beguiling, ideal gift book for the Gelehrte or anyone on your list--just beware of rapidly expanding (and potentially incomprehensible) vocabularies., Schottenfreude is a unique, must-have dictionary, complete with newly coined words that explore the idiosyncrasies of life as only the German language can. • Good thrift

Knowing I bought a used book, I wish there were pictures to see the condition of it. Overall there were minimal wear on the book save for the edge of the bottom cover and two indented lines on the cover. Unfortunately the sticker for the thrift store was stuck on the binding of the book and when I went to peel it back, it ruined the soft cover. There weren’t any wear inside the pages which is good. I would recommend the company would not place a sticker on their books Incase of damage to them. This book was meant for a gift. I know it’ll be fine, I just wish it would be presented well.

  • Witty, inventive, silly and delightful.

Even the footnotes are amusing sources of great trivia from the far reaching and frighteningly well-read Herr Schott. Who else would construct words--in the old script, no less--to express auf Deutsch the morbid urge to slow down and stare at a road accident? And make it funny? Or an expression for feigning sleep to avoid unwanted sexual intimacy? He is wicked bright, this man. This book hat mir Zeuxisgelacht gemacht. (Sorry, I don't know where the umlauts are on my keyboard.)
