  • All Cooling Fans Are Not The Same.

I purchased this GMB fan clutch based on price. Local auto parts stores, Napa, Autozone, O'Reilly's are selling there's about $100 more. When I received my item first thing I noticed was the weight difference. The GMB unit weighs less than the OEM part. It's also smaller in height but has the same diameter. IMO, that's why the GMB part was less expensive. It's not built to OEM Specifications. The GMB unit was easy to install taking just under an hour. I tested the unit and took the truck out for a drive. Everything seemed to be normal. The coolant temp was at 190 degrees and transmission temp was at 130 degrees after driving 1 hour. For my truck these are considered normal temps. I have a 99 F250 Super Duty with a 7.3. Prestone coolant 50/50 mix with Napa Cool additive and Mobil 1 Synthetic Transmission oil. I then tested the unit under load which means I drove in the mountains the next morning. The morning was cool abt 60 degrees and the road is winding and narrow as I climbed up to Ebbetts Pass on highway 4 in California. Max speed about 20-25mph. As I started to climb so did the engine coolant temp and the trans oil temp. By the time I reached the top both oils were up 50 degrees hotter than with the OEM unit that has 322,000 miles on it. As you know over heated oil is the big killer for automatic transmissions and this rise in temperature is unacceptable. If I were pulling a trailer, camper or 5th wheel I could envision the temperatures well into the danger zone. While this GMB replacement part is good deal based on price, it did not perform well in mountain driving. I would not expect it to perform well under the following conditions; hot days, towing, idling in traffic or start/stop driving. On flat level ground in a light duty application the engine coolant and transmission oil temps stayed about the same as with the OEM fan clutch. If you work your 7.3 diesel, this GMB Fan Clutch may not perform as anticipated.
