My mother gave me this book for Christmas, 1996. Since then, it has been my #1 "go to" cookbook when looking for old classics to ideas for entertaining. Every recipe I've tried has turned out well, which is not the case with any of the other books in my collection. I agree that photos would only make it better, but this is a huge compilation of recipes (over 1600), and if this book were much thicker, I doubt I would spend the time searching through it for new ideas. The book is well organized, covers basics including stocks and pastry, none of which I had tried before. There are great ideas for easily made Hors D'Oeuvres and delicious breads. The banana bread has gotten wonderful reviews from my family and friends. The standards are there, but there are also sections on entertaining crowds, wedding cakes, preserves, vinegars, butters, sorbets....and so much more. If I want to try something I've never done, I'll go to this book first. Thanks for a great collection of recipes, Martha....and thank you, Mom!Read full review
there is a few good things about this book, mostly the cooking.. :) has alot of good working every day recipes in it, i loved the smoked salmon mousse and the pork tenderloin was to die for, the best i've had yet. and the kiwi tartlets are really good too., i decided to buy thid book and start a collection of her cookbooks as i watch the show when i can and really like her cooking style, found that cooking her style in my home has made many good family meals which the whole family enjoys, and still be able to cook everyone's fav meals in so many different ways
I bought the cookbook to learn a few tricks. The recipes are easy to follow and 4 out of 5 have turned out great. It's safe to say that Martha knows what she's doing.

No one can do it better than Marta Stewart. Where does this lady get all her knowledge? My husband says thats why shes rich she pays people to research and make these things with her picture on them. But i say oh well. Everything she bakes and cooks comes out perfect. I always say im going to do it like Martha Stewart. When im in the kitchen he refers to me as Martha. Last year for Christmas he got me an aprin that says im Martha's Twin. I love this book! Recipes and pictures are perfect!!
had an old book so well used that pages were falling apart and print was fading and had to get a replacement

I love this book. It is one of my favorites out of my 75+ cookbooks. I do wish it had pics, but the recipes are still wonderful. My favorite onion soup recipe comes from this book. I have even bought this book for my mom. I like looking for books that have a lot of recipes that do not call for a lot of canned food. I grow a garden and want to cook with what I have fresh.
I purchased the book as a gift for a friend who has enjoyed Martha Stewart for many years. This was one of her simple yet classic cookbooks, and will always be a referrence for standard cooking. The price was very inexpensive and was delivered within days. It was also convienient, but appeared to be thoughtful.
