I usually like Ms. Muller's books on Sharon McCone, because they rarely fail to keep you in suspense, but I was pleasantly surprised when I picked this one up....it's not a McCone mystery....but I found it to be every bit as good....maybe better! Point Deception is a hard, gripping story as seen through the eyes of two people. Guy Newberry's writing specialty is unlocking the secrets of small towns....dangerous in itself. He's made a lot of money doing his job, but when his photographer wife is killed while they were working on one of these stories, life has taken a different turn for him. Rhoda Swift is a sheriff's deputy in Soledad County, California. She is haunted by nightmares from her first crime where she saw the horrible, brutal murders of eight people living together in a commune in Cascada Canyon. The 13 year old crime was never solved which haunts Rhoda to this day. The story really begins when the brother of one of the commune victims ask Newberry to investigate the case again. Newberry is interested enough to travel out to Soledad from NYC and begins doing what he knows best again. He finds that the town's people are still scared to death of the murders and don't want to talk. The sheriff's dept. gives him no cooperation and even tries to hinder the case, which makes him suspicious. But, a few people have secrets and they are willing to talk. On the eve of the Cascada Canyon murders another killing spree happens. This unleashes a whole chain of events that will eventually help Newberry and Swift look into the eyes of a nightmare that is gripping the town. Ms. Muller writes one gritty murder mystery. You can feel the torment of the characters in the town. You'll feel the fear and know every smell and sound as if you are there. Some pages I was afraid to actually turn! Great book!Read full review
I set the book down because I didn't know whose it was, came home and ordered it from Amazon. Unfortunately there was yet another titled the same and that was what I ordered, mistakenly--so...I immediately ordered again and made sure it was Daniel Brown's and now am getting ready for an entertaining snow weekend, with the correct Deception Point! Gonna be good!
