I really enjoyed this book. I just happen to pick up the latest copy of Robert Crais' novel at the book store. Normally I am skeptic of reading different authors, but I decided to give the book a shot. I was very impressed with his writing. When I found out that he had a "series," I wanted to start from the beginning and work my way back to Crais's newer books. I prepared myself for this book to be of different quality than newer ones because it was the author's first book, but I stand corrected. I thought this book was just as good as Crais's latest novel. I had a very hard time putting this book down and it was very unpredictable. I can't wait to read his other novels.
This was the first combined Elvis Cole and Joe Pike novel (1985) so it is dated, as they are still using pay phones instead of cell phones, etc. Well written, but the grand finale is rushed and improbable (to me). Still fun to watch Elvis get in over his head, and Joe Pike have to come to his rescue. Worth reading but my least favorite of their series I have read so far.

This is a very exciting novel with almost nonstop action. It is Robert Crais' first novel featuring Elvis Cole as an L.A. private investigator. Cole stars out trying to find a missing husband and son and gets involved in drugs and crime families. I had read a few other Elvis Cole novels, so I wanted to read the first one. Robert Crais is great even in his first book. Cole's partner Joe Pike is also in this novel and he is a character you don't want to miss. This book is a very easy read, not long, -- and I didn't want to put it down.
I read a review of one of the more recent Elvis Cole detective novels by Robert Crais, and it was very positive. But, since I had never heard of this series, much less read any of the books, I decided to read the first one written. It was very good...I like my detectives who know how to crack wise even if means they will end up with a sock to the jaw. The only way I could date the novel by reading it was the model and year of cars mentioned in it and the obvious fact this was before ubiquitous cell phones. The characters are three dimensional and at times surprising and the plot was captivating without being confusing or contrived.

I had read a synopsis of one of Mr. Crais' later Elvis Cole books and found it to be interesting, so I decided that I would like to go back to the beginning of the series and read them all! "The Monkey's Raincoat" was the first book in his private detective Elvis Cole series. I was not disappointed. The book grabbed my attention from the start and kept it until the last page. Elvis Cole is the type of character that comes across as believable and humorously human!
1st of a great series of characters. Start with this book. It will make you eager to read the other 23 books.
