SynopsisEvery time Bill Bryson walks out the door, memorable travel literature threatens to break out. This time in Australia. His previous excursion along the Appalachian Trail resulted in the sublime national bestseller A Walk in the Woods . In A Sunburned Country is his report on what he found in an entirely different place: Australia, the country that doubles as a continent, and a place with the friendliest inhabitants, the hottest, driest weather, and the most peculiar and lethal wildlife to be found on the planet. The result is a deliciously funny, fact-filled, and adventurous performance by a writer who combines humor, wonder, and unflagging curiousity. Despite the fact that Australia harbors more things that can kill you in extremely nasty ways than anywhere else, including sharks, crocodiles, snakes, even riptides and deserts, Bill Bryson adores the place, and he takes his readers on a rollicking ride far beyond that beaten tourist path. Wherever he goes he finds Australians who are cheerful, extroverted, and unfailingly obliging, and these beaming products of land with clean, safe cities, cold beer, and constant sunshine fill the pages of this wonderful book. Australia is an immense and fortunate land, and it has found in Bill Bryson its perfect guide.

Bill Bryson, a travel book author of many years, makes this Australian visit one I'm happy to have taken with him...figuratively, of course, thru reading the book. He's comfortable in expressing his true impressions whether good or bad, in amusing and no-holds barred terms. I've been enjoying this single book for about 20 years via the public library, and decided I NEEDED my own copy to pick up and read any time I wanted! It was a let down when the book ended...when his visit ended; I just wanted it to go on and on. Australia has always had a draw for me and will be a goal I'll never reach, but thru this book, thru this author...I can continue to dream. R E A D I T ! I felt the hot sun, the gritty open friendliness of the people, and the delightful honesty of the author.

  • Aussie book

High-fives to the seller! As for the book, it is billed as a travel guide. It’s not a traditional travel guide but rather reads more like a humorous novel with stories about various areas.

  • Get it if you like travel books.

Not as fun as A Walk in the Woods, but still good. A good companion book to his other books.
