This is a review of the Portable Backhoe Plans. The Good - These are plans for a small portable Backhoe Less expensive then other Backhoe plans. Pretty good info as to what is needed to assemble backhoe - such as specifications of 4 spool valve block, # of cylinders and size, Oil hydraulic reservoir, hydraulic pump, engine, and where one might be able to make substitutions. The Bad - The plans reference a materials list in the instructions, however there is no materials list. While the equipment needed is written out in the instructions, there is no list saying that one needs so much like - Qty of 3"x3"x3/16" x8' square tubing, and so much of such as size plate steel etc. In other words, a materials list is a list that includes all materials needed to build the machine in one location. It will include all quantities of all types of steel needed, Qty of cylinders and specs of each cylinder (you can figure this out from the writeup, but it should be all together in one place), Qty of Hydraulic hoses and sizes etc. There are numerous misspellings, the font and spacing used is very difficult to read even when printed. I am actually looking at the plans on a 32" monitor, with zoom at 200%, and still am having difficulty reading the plans due to the spacing and font. I have worked with CAD programs so I understand what Ben is drawing, but some of the drawings do not include dimensions and maybe difficult for others to read as noted by other reviewers. If you never built a machine like this. it might be difficult trying to figure out - for instance - what type of a hydraulic gear pump is required. While a name is provided, maybe a model number also would be nice to understand what this pump is to get an idea as to an equivalent pump is. The main picture of the Backhoe shown, and the picture of a built backhoe, do not match the plans that are being sold. The third picture supplied in the listing, which is a CAD drawing, is what the end product will look like if you follow the plans to a T, minus cylinders and control valves. The last page of the plans is a Hydraulic Diagram, which is "good", but it has a couple of minor mistakes - i.e. 3 of the hydraulic hoses are labeled A when they should have the numbers 7, 8, and 9 on them instead. An easier to understand Hydraulic Diagram is inside HF's manual for their Small Backhoe. Overall, though, with careful reading, and going over the plans a few times, one should be able to build the Backhoe.Read full review

The plans are very detailed yet easy to understand. I've been looking for a while for a simple set of plans with no luck until I saw this set of plans. The person that e-mailed back and forth helped me to understand it a lot better I will recommend this product.
