Jim Henson's Dark Crystal is arguably one of the oddest yet compelling artistic animative works of the 20th century. This cutting edge tale was about a gelfling (like an elf) named Jen who has a prophecy to fill, heal the so called mystical power called the "Dark Crystal". That is all I will say about it without revealing spoilers. What made this movie so cutting edge is that it did not have cartoon like animation, CGI, or dramatic acting, instead it drew upon Henson's work with the widely regarded and received Muppets. For a movie that was created and released in 1982, it has gained a cult following like few movies before it. I personally think of this movie despite being an adult as one of those "decadent indulgences" that one exhibits when say eating chocolate or smoking a cigar. Many in the film industry panned it saying that it was neither movie nor cartoon, but that is what made it such a colorful and unique movie experience. It was originally slated for children, but being the movie that it is, there may be thematic elements unsuited for the children of this era. Hence its PG rating. Would I recommend this movie? Absolutely!!! Its delightful and painstaking animatronic and special effects are unique among the animation world and this to me was Jim Henson's finest achievement!!! See it for yourself with an open mind and keeping the context to the era the movie was produced in, and you will find yourself in a Muppet style story with an amazing soundtrack that will leave you thinking "you know, I should have given this movie a chance when it came out". If there is any real negative side to this movie, its that perhaps the story can be a bit too twisting to follow and it will not appeal to every person, but its only a minor fault considering that this was the first genre of movie to exclusively feature the Muppets in a more adult, darker tone. Give it a try, for Jim Henson fans its a glimpse into the mind of a true genius!!Read full review
