  • Ancient Egypt on a Disc

This disc is a very good value, containing lots of great information on ancient Egypt. I can find lots of new info in these old books. The basic drawbacks are two: 1. It co9ntains lots of material is found in every ancient Egypt disc collection; & as expected, much of the info is dated & wrong by today's standards. Budge's system of interpretation is clearly outdated- many of his hieroglyphic sounds are wrong, & his interpretation of basic concepts reflects late 19th & early 20th century ideas rather than the ancient Egyptian ones, but he includes incredible hieroglyphic inscriptions that are very difficult or much costlier to obtain elsewhere. The Egyptian phonological errors are also found in many other books in the collection. There is an air of fascination with these old books, an excitement transmitted by the authors, that characterizes early studies. Hieroglyphic inscriptions are included that cannot be found anywhere else. The illustrations impart a mysterious air, so they are of interest & value in themselves. Also, one can trace the beginnings of certain ideas & tendencies in Egyptology through reading these books. The study of the Egyptian concept of the soul finds its scientific basis here, even though the interpretation of that system is different today. The main value for me are the hieroglyphic inscriptions themselves, not the outmoded interpretations. Good modern introductory books exist for those who are looking for the first time. However, for those who seek to understand Egypt as it was being archaeologically discovered, this is a good start.
