It is fascinating to listen to this performance. It is "historical" (1983). What a line-up! Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by James Levine; Chicago Symphony Chorus directed by Margaret Hillis; Kathleen Battle singing the soprano solos; recorded at Orchestra Hall in Chicago. This is unbeatble. I could wish only that it was sung in English, so that the listener could be inspired also by the beautiful text.
A good performance by James Levine, now that he is gone. There are other good performances of Brahms Requiem like Herbert Kegel, Colin Davis, Abbado, Karajan, Bruno Walter, Solti & Barenboim. But Levine is just as good.
