the first unit i received had poor plating with stains and a broken plastic bushing. that was resolved with the second unit i received. both of them came with the Styrofoam packaging completely pulverized. i don't know who the idiot is who is in charge of packaging design but any one awake knows that cheap Styrofoam is not a good packing material for a heavy low volume item like this. these should have cardboard packing. all this is minor, however... the real big problem with both units i got is that the manufacturer does not really want you to use them. surprised? how, you say, do you know what they want? if you have ever used the electric grinders or any real grinders, you know that the cutting blade and the plates are finished to a smooth mirror like finish. this is because the surfaces have to meet precisely to cut off the meat... like scissors. when you get this thing, you have to sharpen the blade and plates yourself because it is not finished... in fact it is so rough that if you try to grind meat with it, the meat will just get stuffed in the gap between the plate and blade. gap? you ask... yes... the plate was rough sliced from a cylinder with a chop saw and the finish is about that good. you see cutting grooves and the plate is cupped so one side would be concave and the other convex. you will have to grind the surfaces flat. then grind them smooth with a finer stone to mirror finish before this thing is useful. the same is true with the blade. it has to be sharpened extensively. unless you have a machine shop with a grinder (not the hand held grinder), you will spend about 12 hours doing this. yes... it is that bad. the idiots who make this product are complete liars by just producing this product. they want you to fail with this, give up, and buy their electric units which at this size cost 10+ more. so why do i give it 2 stars? because i sharpened mine and it works perfectly now. so if you are willing to fix their stupid product, you can have a great machine and not waste your money. this is why i say it is not easy to operate. once you properly sharpen the plates and the blade, you have an excellent machine. think of this not as a finished product but a kit! you cannot use it as it is... you will have to spend a day or more sharpening it. but with this, you do not need electricity to grind and you do not have to worry about burning motors and don't have to spend almost $1k for a blasted grinder. the savings to me was worth the trouble.Read full review

I was looking for a grinder like this that would last ears and not just one or two. This thing is a beast and will probably outlast my lifetime with cleaning and care.

Although somewhat crudely made, the item is doing as advertised. I use it to grind SMALLER fish frames into chum with success. I did not need to "fit" parts or remake any parts -- it worked as expected out of the box. The machine seems strong. Be aware that the main Bering (on the crank end of the feeding screw) is polyethylene so it will wear quickly and probably will not hold if the grinder is motorized.
