This eariler work of Stephenson's was actaully published after Cryptonomicon to milk some more dough out of his name. It's not as compelling as Zodiac or Snow Crash, but as a huge fan of Stephenson I actually enjoyed this book. If you aren't as familiar I think it would be only an average read. Much better than 'command line' which is a complete waste of time.
This work from 1984 was reprinted in 2001 due to overwhelming demand from his fans, who knew the work existed but kept losing out on the few ebay auctions for the only available--and extremely rare--original edition. He really didn't want it republished (and when you read it, you will understand why), but it is a fabulous and quite enjoyable tale of college life that rings true (in an I-can-see-that-happening kind of way) to the experience of geeks who managed to get through college in the 80's.
I waited years for this to be reprinted. From the very beginning, Neal has had a distinctly fun style that takes you inside the heads of all his characters. While this story isn't my favorite of his, it was worth the wait to find it. You can see his wit right from the start and what a imagination...
Neal Stephenson is a top-notch, brilliant writer. i'm sure he wishes he could bury this weak first effort. For God's sake, read everything else he's ever written, but pass this one over.
