SynopsisIn print for fifty-five years, One Man's Meat continues to delight readers with E.B. White's witty, succinct observations on daily life at a Maine saltwater farm., Too personal for an almanac, too sophisticated for a domestic history, and too funny and self-doubting for a literary journal, One Man's Meat can best be described as a primer of a countryman's lessons a timeless recounting of experience that will never go out of style.
Truly one of America's best writers. His descriptions were forever a complete surprise, and he did them so easily.
I had not heard of E. B. White. He was prominent and prolific in the 1940's-60's. Normally, I would not have been interested, thinking it could not be relevant. I took a chance and read this book only because Andy Rooney of TV's "60 minutes" fame said just before he died that his biggest regret was that, even though he was successful, he was never able to write like E. B. White. "One Man's Meat" was one of his favorite White's book.
White was a Master writer. His use of English prose is a continual joy and surprise. This book is an easy read because each chapter is short, the topics are all different, and his perception is as current for today as I have seen, and our family reads a lot. The title is not a guaranteed impulse grabber. White does not need such theatrics. I recommend it to ANYBODY. You will get an irreplaceable short trip whatever chapter you happen to read during that sitting.
Rooney was correct. White was at the top of his game.
- Dean Hammer
E.B. White is, in my opinion, one of the very finest writers that ever lived. Everything he wrote was a joy to read. This is a fine cross section of his wizardry.
