I have followed the Monster Rancher series since MR2 came out for the original playstation and nearly all of them have been worth playing. Monster Rancher 2 is still my personal favorite, and in my opinion, the best game of the series. 3 was fairly good as well and if you have never played a Monster Rancher game before, I recommend starting with 3. For me the main draw of this game was a portable Monster Rancher with 3D animated battles and a similar style to that of 2. The feels like a portable version of 2, and the most similar game to 2 since it came out. The game is full of many more monsters and added combinations, so the variety remains fresh and clever. The game runs quick, battles are fun, and strategy is ever present. While Monster Rancher 2 is still the top dog, if you enjoy Monster Rancher I highly recommend this game. It has a lot of depth and is easily digestible in both small and large playing segments. It also supports online and wireless battles with friends.Read full review
Monster Rancher DS is the best of the handheld Monster Rancher titles by far. It has a wide monster selection and even brings some new ones to the table. While it doesn't use the same regeneration method as the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 titles (you get monsters from CDs, DVDs, and other games) it does throw back to the core concept of what made those titles so great. The game focuses on monster development, growth and exploration. You generate you monster through drawing, speaking or a hidden method. You raise these monsters and have them partake in sporting fighting competitions to earn money. You can also take them on adventures, train at the ranch, or run errantry missions. Like most games in the series, it has a solid story that the player experiences as they progress through time and the league rankings. While not as good as the first four games in the series, Monster Rancher DS is definitely the best choice as far as handheld Monster Rancher titles go. The ability to play on the go, its selection of monsters, and the unique ways of generating those monsters makes for a very interesting and fun game that fans and newcomers both will immensely enjoy.Read full review
A few solid things to note about this game, it is definitely for the monster rancher (or related genre) enthusiasts, I wouldn't risk the money if you don't know you already like it. Secondly, the game is good but some parts (such as animations during training) are obviously incomplete. For example, an owl character that is always nearby while you train is normally just sitting on something in a "Da Vinci" pose with the wings spread out, like it was going to be animated but wasn't. None of these problems affect the actual gameplay so I don't care about it at all, but something that stops it from being a 5 even for a monster rancher fan.
It's a lot like monster rancher 2, but it's portable. The battles are a little slow though, and it's a little hard to find info on the game.

For my taste, Monster Rancher has always been much more entertaining than Pokemon. The DS version moves many of the rare and unusual monsters into "Errantry", what was called "Adventure" in other versions. Unfortunately, this tends to make them harder to unlock. Still an excellent game and endlessly fun to play!
Works perfectly and I'm enjoying raising my monsters.
