A life affirming experience. Frank Darabont’s prison drama The Shawshank Redemption (1994) will bring you to tears as its simple honesty and brutal trauma explore the prison industrial complex. Stephen King’s story is a profound and timeless parable on the effects of political corruption, police brutality, legal loopholes, and prison life. You will find someone to relate to herein as The Shawshank Redemption remains one of the greatest films of all time because it champions hope, bravery, kindness, empathy, friendship, and freedom. King’s writing is brilliant and poignant with realistic drama stemming from horrendous cruelty and glaring flaws within the justice system. The Shawshank Redemption is an apt companion to The Green Mile, Escape from Alcatraz, and Cool Hand Luke. Darabont’s direction is stellar as he keeps your attention in every scene. You are completely swept into Shawshank’s gritty world of broken men. Darabont finds new ways to coherently tell King’s compelling story, so that you are always intrigued at where the story is going. Roger Deakins’ cinematography is stunning and warm with many of his most clever shots herein. A shot looking down from the sky with a man’s arms to represent freedom is absolute genius. Thomas Newman’s score is riveting as it only chimes in to reaffirm The Shawshank Redemption’s mysterious, intense, scary, or emotional sequences. Newman elevates a gorgeous film into a moving one. Tim Robbins is perfect as the intelligent lead Andy Dufresne. Robbins portrays one of cinema’s most thoughtful, pensive, and sympathetic figures with an empathetic face, eyes, voice, movement, and persona. Robbins is as brilliant in The Shawshank Redemption as he is in Mystic River. Robbins is a phenomenal actor because he depicts large themes in subtle displays of acting. Morgan Freeman is as affecting as Robbins because Freeman gives his inmate, Red, a distinct air of hopelessness. His character has given up until he befriends the optimistic and motivated Dufresne. On the other hand, Bob Gunton is brutal and vile as the revoltingly corrupt and cruel Warden Samuel Norton. He knows how to appear fearsome without screaming. His quiet fuming and purposeful vindictiveness is astounding as Gunton acts to peak villainy. Overall, The Shawshank Redemption is a revelation in allowing an audience to empathize with prisoners on a personal level. You should watch it as I’m certain you will love it.Read full review
