Schrade's Dark Horse
There weren't that many Youtube reviews on the Schrade SCHF27 knife, and the one's available did not answer my questions. I took a chance and ordered the knife anyway, and have no regrets, as it's met and exceeded my expectations. I've purchased this primarily fixed blade for weekend camping, my companion knife being a Swedish FireKnife.
The SCHF27 blade's made of 8Cr13MoV high carbon stainless steel, a good combination of Tensile Strength, Rust-Resistance, and Edge Retention. By comparison, the latest Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Pro Survival Knife is 9Cr13MoV steel and the original Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife is reportedly 7Cr17MoV stainless steel. So the SCHF27 sits between these two in comparison. I've used the Gerber knives as they're relatively common, due to the volumes sold, and locating a good review won't be too difficult to find. The added benefit of the SCHF27 is the titanium coating, which isn't coming off in a hurry. The saw teeth on the spine were never intended to be used as a saw, they're there strictly for looks. I do find they work a treat to lift a hot billy off a MKII Wild Woodgas Stove. The cutout in the blade's spine works very well with my Swedish firesteel. In combination with the cutout the choil feels comfortable to "Choke Up" for finer work (i.e. creating a "Fuzz Stick"). The thumb rise could use with some jimping as the synthetic handle can become just a little bit slippery when wet, Canvas Micarta Handle Scales would be a worthwhile mod.
The mini pry tool that fits into the handle scales includes a hex driver, screwdriver, safety cutter, and bottle opener. The hex is one-size imperial not metric, the safety cutter is blunt, and any beer I buy is in a can as I'm not carrying glass bottles in my backpack. My advice is chuck the tool in with your miscellaneous shed box/draw and make something useful if you're handy.
The sheath is good, being a Glass Filled Nylon. While this may not be on par with a Kyxdex sheath it's significantly better than the Ballistic Nylon used on some of the Schrade knives, yes I'm looking at you SCHF10.
Overall, this is a robust camp knife that's long, light and comfortable enough for smaller hands. I would recommend the Schrade SCHF27 as a, primary, fixed blade, full tang knife to any spartan hiker.
