The Stone Compilation You Didn’t Know You Must Have
When I saw that the Rolling Stones had released yet another compilation album just a few years after the previous one I wondered if it was at all necessary. There had been Forty Licks (2002), Grrrr! (2012) so what is Honk for? You may have thought the same and then I looked at the track listing of Honk and found that it is not another attempt at a career spanning compilation but rather focuses on the post-Decca era. While that rules out a lot of classic song they have an excellent home on other, earlier compilations (High Tide & Green Grass and Through the Past Darkly or the expanded edition of Rolled Gold) and a compilation that allows for the post-Decca song to shine might just be the thing. I originally bought this on CD as it seemed like a better format for just letting the songs roll on. It is a really masterful compilation which gives each song a chance to shine. Songs like Start Me Up and Brown Sugar clearly need no help but the songs that might have been left behind in an ad hoc playlist are given just the right context to stand shoulder to shoulder with the more highly regarded songs. As I said I thought that CD (or indeed a digital copy) was the best option, however I have been building a considerable vinyl collection and I had all the Rolling Stone albums, other compilations and saw this again Honk is a rather handsome album on vinyl, it takes up a few sides, but if you are a vinyl fan then you won’t mind the side changes required to listen to this right through and I am very pleased that I took the plunge and bought this vinyl editionVerified purchase: YesCondition: New
