If you are interested in what Nazi Germany considered entertainment back in 1943 you might enjoy this movie. Overly long, boring story with a few moments here and there that might keep you engaged until the end. This is a good print of the movie and there are some scenes with bare-breasted German girls in a harem; something that you would never see in an American film of the time. This movie is not for kids and has a lot of not-so-subtle sexual innuendo. I would highly recommend the Terry Gilliam version of Munchausen over this version.
This is a rare little seen movie, made during WW2 literally as the Nutzie regime was beginning to collapse but was still made somehow at great costs. Nutzie attempts to say "all is well" aside. This is perhaps the very first attempt to make a movie based on the very real character of Baron Munchhausan and his tall tales of fantasy. The cinematography is great, the costumes are wonderful and the special effects for 1943 are wonderfully clever, but the story and pacing is slow and plodding and you get the feeling that everyone involved in this was watching over their shoulders worried that the Gestapo was going to pull the plug on the whole process at any moment. This is definitely worth seeing, but I would much rather watch Terry Gilliam's far far superior "Adventures of Baron Munchhausan"
I really enjoyed the Kino Video release of MUNCHHAUSEN. Wonderful costumes and settings. Color is first rate, too.
Story line, although quite coherent, seemed to wander and meander a bit but no serious complaints about that. The
movie had a nostalgic and wistful side to it also. All in all, it held together nicely and thankfully it was free of Nazi
propaganda. Highly recommended.
