  • Getting to the point with 'Counterpoint'

This is a rare gem of a film featuring some of the best known performers of the silver screen...Maximilian Schell and Charlton Heston. In addition to great music by the likes of Brahms, Beethoven and yes, Wagner, Heston does a great job playing the egotistical conductor of a USO sponsored orchestra performing for the Allied troops in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. They find themselves being taken hostage by the Germans and told they are to give a special 'command performance' for the officers in charge, one happens to be a musicophile and a talented musician in his own right by playing harpsichord, claiming he carried this instrument with him in numerous battles. While Heston is doing the rehearsals prior to the concert, he's surprised by two American soldiers and some members of the Belgian underground that have come to their rescue, posing as some of the musicians. This comes to their relief after they had received word they will be killed after the performance is over. It's like walking on eggshells when both the egos of the Nazi officer in charge and that of the orchestra leader clash. One misstep could truly mean a matter of life and death. Even the conductor's attractive wife tries her best to use her feminine charms like Esther in the Bible to save her friends and colleagues by having a sexual liaison with Schell, only to have it go terribly awry. Regardless of some of these mishaps, the show must go on...and does! The ending is quite climactic, yet very surprising to some...which I will not reveal here. But for those who like classical music and war films, this is an underground classic. I remember watching this film on TV (long before cable TV and HBO) when I was a child with my late parents, who were classically-trained musicians...and I must say, it was quite an interesting narrative. I want to say this film might be based on a true story, but who's to say it never did? Some other films such as 'Playing For Time' and 'Paradise Road' should remind us of the old adage 'Ars longa...vita brevis!' Art is long, life is short! In our short life-span on Earth, we must take some time out of our busy schedules to actually savor what others might take for granted, be it a smile, a flower in bloom, a gentle rainfall over the meadows, a walk on the beach, etc. before it's too late. Mozart lived to be 35 years of age and yet his music is a timeless art form in the making. Let us enjoy life and the treasures that make it all the more precious and valuable....
