This is an excellent router, capable of doing pretty near everything you might need routing and network wise, as well as VPN capabilities. However, while a networking novice can invoke the configuration wizards to get the router up and running using a basic configuration, in order to get full value from the router and to be able to use all of its advanced features, at least intermediate level networking knowledge is required, and Linux knowledge would also be helpful. The device is based on Linux with a Vyatta overlay. It is capable of performing any networking functions that the Linux kernel is capable of, and as this model as some extra memory and storage you can also add additional networking software to the router in the same manner as you would a Linux PC.

I am very pleased with this router. I wanted to upgrade my residential network using a small business / commercial type router that is fast, stable, expandable, and reliable. The EdgeRouter fits the bill. I am impressed with the graphical interface and the ability to install open VPN. Since it is a wired router, I installed two Unifi AP WiFi units. The one thing I do not like, however, is that the PoE not does not follow IEEE PoE standards like IEEE 802.3af/at/bt. To get around this, I used PoE injectors on my APs that provided the correct voltage for the devices.
