These are not conventional bulbs. They work well with AC from the transformer, but won't work with less than 12 volts DC. The light they give off is an unacceptable yellow-green color. They're an integral part of the base, so if they burn out, you can't buy a replacement bulb. I may be an old fuddy-duddy, but I'll stick with tried and true standard bulbs like Bachmann 42240 (no LNOS) that screw into a socket.
I have purchased several of these lighting kits for my model railroad. These kits do the job. I have used them on model houses, a Dairy Queen and a bar ( yes, a bar ) that I have on my layout.
