Although not well known this is a must read classic from the early 20th Century. Though Eliot was an American he later moved to England and remained there in an atmosphere conducive to his creativity. The images brought to mind in this poem are stark and realistic. The Wasteland is a poem written about an empty lot which symbolized the many aspects of Life, England, Civilization, Poetry, etc, at the time it was written. Similar to the dark poetry of Sassoon, Owen and others who lived and perished in that tragic era. To say this poem was before it's time is an understatement, it applies to today's world just as much as it did at the time it was written. If you are looking to read cheerful poetry or are depressed easily this is not for you. If you wish to read an example of great poetry and perhaps learn how to use images in a way that can bring the hair up on the back of a reader's neck, then by all means " buy, beg or steal " a copy.Read full review
