HOW TO USE: Make sure vise is securely mounted to the workbench and the swivel base lock is secure. Open the vise by turning the vise handle counterclockwise. Place item between the serrated jaws. Close the vise by turning the vise handle clockwise until the item is snug in the serrated jaws, continue to tighten until you can no longer move item.

Great for intended use.
I bought this vise to use around house and for general gunsmithing. Works quite well for its intended purpose. I am not intending to use this the same way as a forged steel vise for heavy duty work, as that was not intention. Has exceeded my expectations and is all that is needed for about 85% of its users. Some may require more HD vise. I did take it apart and shim the pivot screw with a thin wall bushing so there is no wabble when locked down. I would definetly buy another one! Lasted 3 months GARBAGE QUALITY.
Wouldn't clamp to prevent it from rotating. I had to tap the holes for the two Locks deeper. They're only tapped halfway through the locking ring. I cleaned up various poor machine and rough edges all over the vice with a file. I think I used it about 4 times in 3 months and when I was cranking down to grip a 3/16 inch bolt the head snapped off. Poor quality cast iron. Complete junk.

You could pay more and get a little bigger and heavier. This is about the right size for most hobby and home repair guys. If you need a bigger vice your probably a tradesman or professional.
