Perhaps one of the greatest books for children of all time. Not only is the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe a spellbinding tale, it acquaints children with crucial "life lessons" and truths that could well help them make wise choices in later life. As opposed to confusing moral relativism so prevalent in today's society, readers will find that evil does exist an is, well, evil. But this is not a story where all good guys succeed and all bad guys fail. In this tale we find people who have been overcome by evil and behave just terribly, but through the love and grace of others are able to escape their destructive ways and turn their lives around. This book has everything! Real-life kids, talking animals, mythical creatures (fauns, centaurs, giants), and even Santa Claus (Father Christmas). The story is set during World War II in England. It would be most enjoyed by children 5th grade or higher, but could be read to slightly younger kids. There are a few British terms used in the book that most kids will not understand without explanation, but these are not crucial to understanding any of the action or storyline. The older the reader, the more profound they will find the story. And like any great children's book, it can be equally enjoyed by adults. Try to get an edition with the original illustrations by Pauline Baynes. A 50th anniversary edition was published with these same illustrations water-colored by the original artist.Read full review
