I'm no literary reviewer, but I'm enjoying these books enormously (with constant reference to the dictionary for the many nautical terms employed). They are vastly entertaining and informative, just a wonderful read.

Patrick O'Brien captures life as a British naval officer in the era of the Napoleonic wars with style and panache. Mixing equal parts humor, passion, and pure excitement in with the day to day details of life aboard windbourne ships of war. His characterizations are full and vivid, and Captain "Lucky Jack" Aubrey and his great friend (and secret Naval intelligence service spy) Dr. Stephen Maturin seem to come to life in the mind's eye as easily as if the reader had known them all their lives. In 'Post Captain,' the second of twenty novels O'Brien wrote dealing with these men and their adventures, the reader finds that war with Napoleon Bonaparte has come again, and Jack must once more take to the sea for king and country. Complicating matters though, Jack has lost his small fortune and is being pursued to be thrown in debtor's prison. Also, the book introduces the two ladies who will be the love interests of our heroes for many pages to come--sparking a rivalry between the two friends that may lead to a fatal duel! The battles are scintillating, rife with cannonfire and triumph, and the wounds go far beneath the skin aboard ship and on land. A fantastic time-warp to another age.Read full review
This second book of the Aubrey-Maturin series helps to establish what looks to be an ungoing romantic drama between the main characters and their respective relationships. The book takes a very realistic look at the corruption and politics of the English Admiralty of the age depicted. The only complaint I might have about this series so far is that Mr. O'Brian occasionally seems to wander quickly from one scene to the next, and the reader has to take a second to make the exchange. But this is great fare, the stuff that boyish childhood dreams are made of while still being true to historic accuracy and I am looking forward to collecting and reading the entire series (have now obtained most of them, and all right here on e-bay.)
The best, most enjoyable tale, of life at sea during the Napolanic war. Patrick O'Brian, gives us a look at the nuts, and bolts of sailing in war time, on a British warship. Using the fictonal Captain Aubrey, as a conglomeration, of several genuine English sea Captains, the author uses this series, to retell many true amazing exploits, and throw in some excentric humor along the way. This book was the last book, I needed to complete my collection of all the Aubrey Maturian books.
