This gem of a movie is not one most people think of when they think of Steve Martin. But he does a marvelous job portraying Vinnie Antonelli, a mid-level "wise-guy" in the witness protection program. Rick Moranis puts in a good performace as Barney Coopersmith, the FBI agent charged with keeping Vinnie alive so he can testify. But Vinnie re-embarks on his career when he finds out the little town in California where he's been placed is chock full of other members of the witness protection program. Along the way Vinnie gets arrested a couple times and sprung by the FBI, and springs a surprise of his own at the end. One of the great scenes is Vinnie's trip to the supermarket and his creative use of a pricing gun. All in all, a little-knon but thoroughly enjoyable addition to the Steve Martin body of work.Read full review
Been looking for this movie on DVD for years. Steve Martin and Rick Moranis swapped roles just before commencement of shooting, and I can't imagine it being as funny or provocative the other way around. It's a hilarious, irreverent look at the FBI's Witness Security Program when an urban mobster stool-pigeon is hidden in a Midwestern, white-bread suburb. Check out the "Lambada" dance scenes and you'll roll on the floor. One concern: The product was advertised as "widescreen" (enhanced for 16x9 televisions). The delivered product was "full Screen" (for old 4x3 TVs). Other than that, the product was as advertised. But, so many of these offerings are described as "widescreen", that at least some are likely misrepresented. Look up the UPC description online before buying.
Although I don't like all Steve Martin movies, I love this one! Steve Martin as the mobster in the witness protection program and Rick Moranis as the ultra conservative FBI agent are hysterical together. You'll love the dance numbers . . . they are fun to watch and start your feet tapping. Also, be sure to catch another FBI agent who is supposed to be watching Steve Martin (Vinnie), but can't keep still when the music starts. He's really quite good. Joan Cusack is superb in her role as a romantic interest of Rick Moranis (and also a head taller). All in all, a very funny movie.
Well, I'm a Steve Martin fan! I have seen all of his films and this is one of my favorites. When Vinnie (Steve Martin) is hidden away in an obscure suburb in "nowheresville" America prior to testifying against the Mafia ,he ingratiates himself to the locals, whle fleecing them on all levels. He has an unusal credo which I like to live by as well..."It's not tipping I believe in, it's overtipping'. (He even tips the FBI agent (Rick Moranis) who shadows him to insure he makes it safely to the witness stand. A great film! By the way Rick Moranis does a very sexy Merengue in this movie.
I absolutely lovvvve My Blue Heaven! I watch it 1-2 times each year!.. and invite friends over to watch it. They love it, too! Great cast. Stellar performance by Steve Martin. Wonderful, fun, bigger than life personality as Todd the gangster. No inappropriate material ~ even for children ~ in this movie.
