This radio, while well constructed, does not have a scan feature. In today's un-congested 11 meter band, most folks need a scan-function to find local contacts for short range walkie-talkie use. If used in reasonably close proximity to another walkie talkie for outings, hiking etc. then no problem (as long as you agree on a channel) ... Get an extended range antenna to replace the stock rubber-duck. In the final analysis, Midland and Cobra make a more compact model (with inter-changeable power boxes btw) that has scan capability.
