I have read all of Mr . McCulloug's except one and heve enjoyed them all . This is well researched & interesting as usual howwever it doesn't flow with the same narrative rythym that his books normally do . It's a little chopy as it jumps from one pioneer to another . Hard for me to keep the characters and their relationship to each other & the story line together , though I am only about 1/3 thru it . Hopefully it will all come together .

This book is an excellent historical account of the pioneers moving into the Ohio region and being from Ohio, I know about most of the places written about. This book brought back memories from my youth of Ohio History classes. Even though it is a historical account of hardships of the pioneers it is written in way that keeps you interested and wanting to see what happens next. Good Stuff!

A compelling tale of a little known major expansion into the Ohio or Northwest Territory, which, at the time, represented the young country’s great western wilderness. The spirit of hard work, freedom from slavery, commitment to public education and community service, provided the backbone values of the future United States. The brave and daring pioneers who undertook this difficult expansion are brought to life and their struggles, successes, and failures, are made vividly real for the reader.
