SynopsisChristina Rossetti's famous narrative poem is a gothic fantasy, dangling two young sisters before sin and death. The lyrical masterpiece is brought to life with haunting illustrations by Arthur Rackham. Lizzie and Laura are best friends as well as sisters. They love each other dearly, and nothing can come between them. But when Laura falls victim to temptation and is persuaded to eat the fruit a grotesque group of goblins offer her, the sisters' relationship is tested. Will Lizzie be able to save Laura from a tragic end? With themes of morality, sin, and redemption, Goblin Market is one of Christina Rossetti's most popular pieces, first published in 1862. The wonderful poem is accompanied by haunting, dream-like illustrations by Golden Age Illustrator Arthur Rackham. His unique style refines and elucidates Rossetti's masterful poetry., This edition of Rossetti's classic poem, Goblin Market is illustrated with Arthur Rackham's dazzling colour illustrations. Goblin Market (composed in 1859 and published in 1862) is a narrative poem by Christina Rossetti. Rossetti (1830 - 1894) was an English poet who wrote a large variety of romantic, devotional and children's poems. 'Goblin Market' is a work with a particularly curious history - it has features of remarkably sexual imagery - yet Rossetti often stated that the poem was intended for children, and indeed, wrote many other nursery tales. It essentially revolves around two close sisters; Laura and Lizzie, as well as the goblins to whom the title refers. The edition of Goblin Market is also accompanied by a series of dazzling colour illustrations by Arthur Rackham (1867-1939). One of the most celebrated painters of the British Golden Age of Illustration (which encompassed the years from 1850 until the start of the First World War), Rackham's artistry is quite simply, unparalleled. Throughout his career, he developed a unique style, combining haunting humour with dream-like romance. Presented alongside the text, his illustrations further refine and elucidate Rossetti's masterful poetry. Pook Press celebrates the great 'Golden Age of lllustration' in children's literature - a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.
Banned. Or *Would be* Nowofdays! OMG.... This IS a 'childrens' tale', as was often the case in days gone By - a "Morals Tale" - of the perils of Temptation, ignorance, and what we Now refer to as "Stranger Danger"! Even so - in our world of snowflake sensitivities This tale could be found to produce PTSD.... (See: The Brothers Grimm). Not Disney.. No Spoilers!
I bought the book for the Arthur Rackham illustrations, and Devine these Are! And the Tale itself, by Rosetti, was a Compelling read.. to Me.. But I aged.. Yet, as a Matured, (over ripened) Adult I found Impact in the message - in severity of Consequence, which Used to be Quite "instructional" to children of that bygone era... The Mastery of Rackham, as an Illustrator of this - and many other Great childrens' tales - serves to Visually *drive Home* the delightfully Descriptive prose, in 'poetic' format.... STILL Recommended, though!
The story is cute. It is told using poetry and lacks the illustrations I was expecting from Arthur Rackham. Just the cover which is beautiful. Not suitable for little children.
