Biggest Bang for the Buck on VHF/UHF

For an inexpensive "chatter-box", this is a terrific radio. It has many features and for a compact 25 Watt dual band transceiver, it is well worth the money. I have several of these, in my RV, different vehicles, a go-box, and I even just put one on my radio bench in my shack to have convenient 2 meter functionality. I used to use a hand held with a simple J-pole antenna at home but now use this mainly due to the small size, price point, and it does everything I need it to do for basic 2-meter and 70 cm comms and local repeater work. Many other low end Chinese radios have power problems or inadequate heat sinks, so they overheat. This little guy is a nice balance. 25 Watts of power, a very large heat sink body and a fairly large cooling fan that runs quietly. Microphone is a bit Chintzy, but audio is fine and I get reports of Full Quieting on my transmissions. In Short, best bang for the buck for basic 2M/70cm work.

  • Top critical review

    Looks great, functionwise.

Still haven' been able to program it let alone use it. Major problems programming it from link provided...Actual s/w not available on cd's since China has actual cd production equipment severely limited (perhaps restricted). China manufactures and sells dvd / cd recorders and players.

  • Nice little transceiver that performs as advetised.

Lets start with the bad...the channel programming is piddly, but that can be helped by Chirp or a similar program. The instruction pamphlet leaves a strong desire for improvement and at least the back panel is completely unexplained (though I had no problem figuring out what the PL connector is for) And there we are at the end of the bad as I have seen so far. I have yet to figure out how to scan thee VHF and UHF channels so I cannot say much about that and the manual is not very helpful... so we leave that as neutral. Positive is that it actually performs as advertised having 10 watt in low setting and 25 watt in high setting on an artificial load (wherein, nowhere in the manual it is specified that it is supposed to have 10 watt) in VHF and 10 in low, 20 in high in UHF. Lastly, the size is such that the transceiver can be fitted in a fairing pocket on my motorcycle... and that was the main reason I bought it.

  • A fine purchase!

Rather advanced for such a radio, affordable, too. Range in my area, 17km with the external multiband antennas. Observed SWR is less than 2:1 across the frequency bands available. Its small size allows roof mointing in my truck without head banging into it. Volume is hearable even with mud/snow all terrain tyres on dry pavement. The radio takes the 14 volt charge my alternator puts out so far. No road static observed so far, but does get crossband signals when very close to other service transmitters. Not much of a problem except when in big cities. All in all, a good purchase to be pleased with. And dealing with a great Seller, too! Arrived on time, undamaged, and worked right out of the box. No complaints at all.

  • It simply works as it is supposed to without the expense of a lot of unneeded extras.

Works well, I have not noticed some of the problem that others have pointed out, such as the volumn control beeing touchy. It does run a little warm, but if you are worried about that, a cheap computer fan over the top of it will solve that problem for you, as will simply enough air space around radio. It is a little difficult to program manually, but it is possible. Chirp programs it very easily. I would say this radio works as well as most other units on the market by major manufactures, without the high price tag.
